When you’re wanting to binge or overeat, on a biological level, you’re in a high stress state. You’re in fight or flight. Food is how you flee, how you escape from this panic. Ah, yes, you feel better as the panic fades, even as you then feel worse for overeating.
Healing a pattern of overeating means finding a different way to cope. We find other ways to move out of fight or flight – soothing our emotions and anxiety – besides food. And yet releasing what we think of as our safety – food – can feel terrifying.
It takes tremendous courage to face this fear and the discomfort it brings. We bolster our courage by creating refuge. Feeling secure with rhythm, predictability, & structure creates a safe container in which to unfold. We feel like we have what we need so we can walk through the fear of letting go of the food and coming back to ourselves.
